A note from Teresa Adams

Back to top of page icon

A point comes in The Work, when we awaken to the recognition in conscience, that The Work—the living vibration and its transmission, opening for us the possibility of evolution—is a fine quality materialized through the efforts and sacrifices of the many who can see higher with deeper clarity. They are the strong many who have called down to this plane an influence of a higher force inviting us to evolve. We are the benefactors of their conscious being-efforts.

As Mr. Patterson would often remind—one can never "pay" for this in the currency of the world. And yet, in time there is an awakening to the responsibility we each carry to live and spread the message of this ancient teaching. Mr. Gurdjieff's message is that the teaching of The Fourth Way shows us the way to the Coming Good of actualizing self-transformation towards higher and higher degrees of Being—and that this is our duty as human beings.

The seeds for the future of The Work have been planted through the Gurdjieff lineage, including in Mr. Patterson's often repeated injunction distilled in: "The Work must continue!" And this call is for The Work to continue to blossom in its fullness. As Mr. Gurdjieff gave, the fullness of The Work occurs not in one direction but simultaneously in its three directions of service: for oneself, for one’s community & group, and for The Work itself.

May we all awaken in gratitude for this sacred contact. And may we, as all those before us who have kept this current alive, also work to embody this sacred Teaching for all those who have yet to come.

With heartfelt gratitude for the generosity of all in support of The Work.

About us

Back to top of page icon

Established in 1993 in the direct lineage and esoteric tradition of The Fourth Way, The Gurdjieff Legacy Foundation was originally founded and directed by Mr. Patterson. His teacher was Lord John Pentland, the man appointed by Mr. Gurdjieff to be the head of The Work in America. At this time, Teresa Adams, Mr. Patterson's student of over 30 years, now directs The Gurdjieff Legacy Foundation and its many offerings.

AreteTelos, the non-profit vehicle for The Gurdjieff Legacy Foundation, is organized exclusively for educational, charitable, and religious purposes, and continues a branch in the lineage of transmission of The Fourth Way, the sacred teaching of self-development brought by G. I. Gurdjieff.

We are an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) charitable, nonprofit organization. Your donation is fully tax-deductible for US taxpayers.

Our work

Our many efforts ensure the viability of our mission to make Mr. Gurdjieff's Teaching and methods of self-transformation available for the Greater Good of the individual, community, and the society we live in to become what we truly are—Images of God.

We are actively engaged in the following program areas:

Group Studies offer an opportunity to work with others in a focused and supportive space. Participants engage in small group exercises, ask questions, and exchange in dialogue to enter deeper into their experiences, struggles, and successes as they learn to apply in daily living the ideas contained in Mr. Gurdjieff's Teaching.

Online Fourth Way Studies are given via bi-monthly correspondence using a web portal. This program offers a possibility for those living in areas where we don’t currently have an ongoing Group, to make contact with this sacred Teaching. The Program is uniquely designed in that the student works individually with a Helper-Instructor and is led through the curriculum according to their experience and understanding.

Resident Seminars & Immersions are held several times a year for 4 – 7 days. These are intensive periods when we explore a Fourth Way theme in a variety of ways including exercises, guided meditation, Haida Yoga and Movements, dialogue, and private interviews. Workshop Days are one-day non-resident offerings, less intensive than Seminars/Immersions.

Fourth Way Practices, Events, and Outreach activities are held throughout the year for students to work together with both practical physical tasks as well as with inner practices. Through these opportunities the student verifies the ideas of The Fourth Way not just intellectually but with the whole body-mind—intellectual, emotional, and physical. The work also includes projects aimed at developing Fourth Way educational materials for print and digital publication, including books, e-books, web content, periodicals, and visual and audio-visual materials.
